Well if you do not have anything planned for first day off, Saturday, away from the daily grind of work. Why don't you get outside and celebrate Earth Day 2006.
Yep that's it April 22
nd is here again and it is time to pay tribute to the many fantastic experiences this earth has to offer our human race through natural beauty.
I have always been one of those people who feels responsible for even the tiniest piece of paper falling out of my purse and could never leave to fly away. I live in a small town and in this town we currently do not have a recycling program, you know the kind of program where the big blue box is left for you to fill and then the truck comes and takes it away. Our program is a do-it-yourself thing with boxes in a central location for residents to drive by and drop off. I do not mind because I can not imagine any other way of living but to recycle. We recycle everything in this house, it is like we almost have to have prizes for the kid who comes up with the most ingenious way to recycle a sandwich bag and not get food poisoning, really.
I think when a family makes "Earth Friendly" a way of life it just becomes routine and like going to work or having a shower, you just do it! We always say to the kids, "well where do you think it disapears to if we do not recycle this?", then we took the field trip to the local dump! Eye opening experience or nostril opening, or stomach opening that depends on the kid.
We also as a family try to do other things for our part in keeping this earth our mother healthy and alive for our children's children. We use energy efficient light bulbs, and have added the highest amount of insulation to our house, replaced all of the windows with energy low Argon windows, replace all of the appliances to extremely low energy counterparts, I like to hang my laundry out on my laundry line. I do this all summer long! My family walks or we ride bikes as much as possible to reduce the amount we drive our vehicles. We also replaced out toilets to low volume dual flush toilets from New Zealand, really why flush all of that unnecessary water down the toilet??? If you ever have the chance to change out the toilets, think about these as an option.
Our next dream is to get hot water on demand, so you have hot water when you need it and your electric bill is not going up all of the time to heat hot water in a holding tank.
Anyway these are just some of the changes we made as a family. I would love to hear from you and what you do for your part. Post here or email me at
christina@mom-co.comI and my family will be attending a tree planting ceremony in our city and maybe have a dance around our compost box in the back yard, we'll see.
